Engineering People Lead

We are looking for an Engineering Operations Lead to run the organizational and people-leadership backbone of our Engineering function. This role directly line-manages up to 50 engineers and QA across the UK and CZ, ensuring teams are structured effectively, supported, and operating at a high standard.
This is a unique role that combines leadership, workforce planning, operational discipline, financial awareness, and vendor coordination. You will partner with Engineering leadership, Delivery, HR, Finance, and Procurement to ensure Engineering scales sustainably and maintains a high‑performance environment.
What you'll be doing
People Leadership
Directly manage up to 50 engineers and QA, running 1:1s, coaching, performance reviews, and day‑to‑day leadership.
Set expectations, ensure clarity of roles, and support individuals through development and team transitions.
Identify and act early on engagement issues, team friction, performance dips, or burnout risks.
Promote team stability across UK and CZ, ensuring consistent leadership standards.
Growth, Development & Capability Building
Lead the Engineering people development cycle: goals, feedback, reviews, and progression clarity.
Support engineers in building actionable development plans aligned with technical pathways.
Work with Principal Engineers to assess skills, identify gaps, and grow capability across teams.
Maintain visibility of strengths, career aspirations, and succession risks.
Engineering Operations & Workforce Management
Own engineering organisational structure: headcount, skills mapping, squad composition, and capacity planning.
Monitor workload balance, team health signals, and operational risks across all teams.
Partner with Delivery Leads to align demand, resourcing, and execution readiness.
Drive effective onboarding, team integration, and continuity planning during organisational changes.
Cross‑Site Leadership (UK & CZ)
Ensure consistent people and operating practices across both locations.
Build strong relationships with engineers and leads locally and remotely.
Support cohesion, shared standards, and cross‑team alignment across offices.
Engineering Culture & Communication
Promote a healthy, accountable engineering culture with strong communication and collaboration habits.
Support engineering-wide communication rhythms, learning sessions, and recognition practices.
Finance, Forecasting & Vendor Oversight
Maintain accurate headcount and workforce cost tracking.
Partner with Finance and Engineering leadership on budget alignment and forecasting.
Support decisions on internal vs vendor resourcing based on cost, capability, and strategic needs.
Coordinate vendor-related onboarding, transitions, and offboarding with Procurement.
Required Skills
Proven experience directly managing teams and working with engineering teams.
Familiarity with structured people‑management frameworks (performance reviews, progression, performance improvement).
Understanding of engineering workflows, team roles, and technical environments.
Ability to interpret team health, workload, and capability signals and act early.
Strong organisational discipline with confidence working on headcount, forecasting, and workforce cost data.
Experience collaborating with Engineering, Delivery, HR, Finance, and Procurement.
Strong communication and relationship‑building skills across UK and CZ teams.
